We are a country of more than 310 million persons, and about 200 million potential voters. About 45% of these are registered voters and roughly 45% million of them actually voted. Therefore, about 35% of the eligible electorate voted and overall about 47% of the votes were cast for Democrats and about 53% for Republican/Tea Party candidates. The Republican/Tea Party claim that they have a mandate is based upon their accumulating about 37 million out of the 200 million plus eligible voters, or about 19%. About 81% percent of the eligible voters either voted Democrat (about 33 million) or did not vote (130 million). The Republican/Tea Party claim of a mandate is about as hollow as their "Pledge to America" that they ballyhooed just before the election.
The 75% of our eligible voters who decided not to vote discloses the real
Mandate of Disbeliefin our political system's ability to deliver what is beneficial to all of our people. We want the truth from our political leaders and a plan to work together to solve the serious problems that confront our country. The Republican/Tea Party claim of a mandate is another ploy to dangle empty promises before the impatient American people. How much more of their arrogance will we take?

I agree, Phil. A great many campaign promises were made, hoping to persuade voters. It is not clear whether those promises won the election, or whether other issues (cast out the incumbants and Democrats) was the deciding issue. Most likely was the tidal wave of wanting change.
If so, the Republicans should accept that they are the current office holders. But it is dishonest to say that they understand what the voters wanted. And there certainly is not a mandate to weaken environmental protections.
All the more reason Alan to fight back against the claim of mandate and mobilize others and continue to protect our fragile environment. Thanks
